Awarding Division Chief John Crater and Battalion Chief Michael Martinez

Heroism means running toward danger when others need help most.

Supervisor Spiegel and her colleagues joined the Riverside County Fire Department in recognizing Division Chief John Crater with the Silver Medal of Valor and Battalion Chief Michael Martinez with the Gold Medal of Valor for their courageous actions during the 2024 Airport Fire.

Chief Crater rescued two residents and a dog as flames threatened El Cariso Village, while Chief Martinez saved a woman suffering from severe burns and transported her to medical care. Their bravery, quick action, and commitment to protecting others represent public service at its highest level.
