Riverside County Departments Host Annual "Longest Night" Homeless Persons Memorial Day

December 29, 2023

Riverside University Health System (RUHS) and the County of Riverside Housing and Workforce Solutions (HWS) commemorated the annual "Longest Night" Homeless Persons Memorial Day on December 21st. This event, aligned with the winter solstice—the longest night of the year—aims to increase awareness about the struggles faced by the homeless population and to honor the memory of those who have passed away. The homeless community faces significantly higher risks, including a ninefold increase in the likelihood of suicide and a reduced life expectancy compared to the general populace.

The "Longest Night" serves as a moment of remembrance and a catalyst for action to support the county's most vulnerable citizens. During the event, participants shared stories and memories of individuals who lost their lives to homelessness. Furthermore, essential items such as blankets, jackets, personal hygiene products, Narcan, snacks, and information about available resources were distributed.

The memorials, held at three different sites within the county, paid tribute to the 284 individuals who died on the streets of Riverside County in 2023. Each of these individuals was remembered by name, and candles were lit. The event also included a special homage to nine veterans who were among the deceased. This annual observance not only honors lost lives but also sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by the homeless community. Read more...
